Breeds of Dogs:
Wolf Hybrids

This page is intended to provide quality information about specific breeds of dogs.  Please make an informed choice before getting any new pets!  No breed of dog is suitable for every home, and understanding breed characteristics can enable a new dog owner to find which one is right for themselves.  If you have a page dedicated to a particular breed that you would like listed here, please send me the URL and I will review it.  This page is meant for information, and Breeders will be listed on their own page.

Wolf Hybrids, also known as Wolf-dogs, can be found here along with information on their wild relatives.

Warning:
Declaring your dog as being of wolf descent may a FATAL ERROR.  In many parts of the United States, wolf hybrids are classified as "wild" or "game" animals, "inherently dangerous to humans," and are prohibited.  Some states have strict licensing requirements.  At this time, there is NO APPROVED RABIES VACCINE for wolfdogs, and in many places, any animal BELIEVED to be a hybrid will be DESTROYED if it should ever happen to bite.

Wolf Hybid Saves Owner in Machete Attack
An Alaskan man attacked and killed his father with a machete in the small town of Palmer, Alaska.  He then attacked his father's fiance with the machete.  That's when Bear intervened.  Bear is a 160 lb. wolf and mastiff cross.  In addition to being charged with two counts of first-degree murder, and three counts of attempted first-degree murder, he is also being charged with animal cruelty for injuring the dog in the attack.

Wolf-Like and Wolf Hybrid Breeds

One of the greatest problems with aquiring a wolf hybrid dog is the inability to predict or determine the behavior and characteristics of the adult dog.  Here are a few different options for persons interested in getting a wolfdog.  Some are breeds that have been recently created by crossing wolves with dogs and creating a new breed, others are what is known as "primitive breeds"-- dogs which have been around for centuries, but are still very close to their wolf ancestry.

RABIES:

Many states refuse to allow wolf dogs because of the lack of an approved rabies vaccine.  There is no evidence that the current vaccines used for dogs is ineffective in wolves.

WARNING:

Claiming your dog is part wolf can be FATAL.  If your dog bites, most states will regard it as an unvaccinated animal.  It will be euthanized and decapitated for rabies testing-----
